VDMHA Pictures

Date: 18 Nov 2015

VDMHA will be holding its picture night on November 24, 2015.

This year VDMHA has decided to go with a local photographer, Olsen Art, and that the pictures would be done off ice pictures so that practices can still happen as regularly scheduled. The pictures will take place upstairs at the arena.

Teams are required to be dressed and ready to go 15 minutes before your scheduled time.  It is extremely important for everyone to be ready as group picture will happen first and then the individual pictures.

Please note helmets are NOT needed for pictures.

Also, if the player has skate guards they can then wear their skates upstairs. However, if they do not have skate guards we are asking that they carry their skates up and put them on upstairs on the black mat.

Each player will receive an individual and team photo at no cost. If you wish to purchase extra photos, a link will be provided shortly after the photo shoot.

Referee Clinic Nov 7, 2015

Date: 27 Oct 2015

We're looking for referees! If you are interested in a challenge, a brief workout, or a bit of extra cash, this is an excellent opportunity, whether it's your first job or you are older and seeking a way to contribute to the sport.

All interested referees must be 13 years old  and must attend a one-day clinic before they can be certified to referee. This year's clinic happens on November 07, 2015.

If you have not yet refereed, there is a mandatory Hockey University online course that must be completed first. It takes a few hours and covers basic rules and principles for a referee.

If you are interested or know someone who is interested in refereeing hockey this year, please contact Dane Koster, Vegreville's Referee in Chief, at 780-603-8558 or dane.koster@gmail.com. Please do so BEFORE (preferably well before) November 01, 2015, so that we can meet all applicable deadlines.

Thanks to all those who choose to wear the stripes!

VDMHA Fundraising 2015 - 2016

Date: 28 June 2015

At this year AGM we asked for feedback regarding fundraising. We have used that feedback along with others we received to offer a bit of a change in our fundraising model.

Last year we were close to a breakeven year but had one less team for ice expenses, with a casino. Without a casino last year we would have had a loss of over $20,000. So prior to fee/fundraising changes we did a review of neighbouring similar style associations. In review we realized most association fees were between $100-300 more with higher fundraising commitments. We want to strive to keep our fees on the lower side of the average surrounding areas so we have kept a minimal fee increase while still including some tournament funding and conditioning camps at certain levels.

VDMHA will still run one event (e.g. puck n funny) as we received a lot of feedback that they liked an event that brought everyone together. This event is not part of our general fundraising.

We have created a new fundraising option for the 2015/2016 season.

1. FUNDRAISING PAYOUT - this year families will have the option of paying out their fundraising fees. $250/player is payable with your online registration. This will exempt you from taking part in this year VDMHA FUNDRAISING COMMITMENT.

2. VDMHA FUNDRAISING COMMITMENT - those not taking part in the PAYOUT option will need to provide a VDMHA FUNDRAISING COMMITMENT CHEQUE for $350/player post dated January 31, 2016. These will need to be provided at your first parent meeting to your level director. We will determine what fundraiser (e.g.  Raffle, bottle drive, product sales) will be held based on number of families who chose the fundraising commitment option. All fundraisers will be completed prior to January 31, 2016. You are responsible for 100% of the value of your fundraising commitment. If fundraising commitment is not met then cheques will be cashed. Any cheques not valid will result in players unable to be on the ice until paid.

We hope these options improve our fundraising model. We had several families contact us that they wanted a payout option so we will test this model to see if it is successful. We also heard concerns with selling high priced tickets and we hope that with this change we can do some different fundraising options.

Thank you

VDMHA

Bauer Goal Mask / Cage Recall

Date: 17 June 2015

Information Bulletin

SUBJECT: BAUER GOALIE MASK/CAGE RECALL

This Information Bulletin is being distributed to all contacts of Hockey Alberta. We would ask your assistance in providing the widest possible distribution for this notice about a joint recall by Health Canada, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Bauer Hockey Corp.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an update to the Information Bulletin sent out earlier today, which included an incorrect Subject Line. Bauer helmets are not being recalled; rather certain Goalie Masks/Cages are being recalled, as outlined below. Hockey Alberta apologizes for the confusion that may have been created by the initial bulletin.

This recall involves the following goal masks and cages:

• Bauer Concept C1 Goal Mask with Certified Titanium Oval Wire: carbon fiber shell with a foam liner and sweatband, and a titanium wire cage that attaches to the mask with two screws on each side of the mask; Senior masks in sizes S/M and M/L, available in two shell colors: black and white. “Concept C1" is marked on the top of the shell. A sticker inside the shell at the jaw lists the model and size. A second sticker on the other side of the shell at the jaw lists the country of origin (China), the assembly date and the CE certification. Certification (CSA, HECC) and warning stickers are affixed to the backplate of the mask.

• Bauer NME 10 Goal Mask with Certified Titanium Oval Wire: fiberglass/carbon fiber shell with a foam liner and sweatband, and a titanium wire cage that attaches to the mask with two screws on each side of the mask. Senior masks in three sizes: Fit 1, Fit 2 and Fit 3, available in two shell colors: black and white. "NME10" is marked on the top of the shell. A sticker inside the shell at the jaw lists the model and size. A second sticker on the other side of the shell at the jaw lists the country of origin (China), the assembly date and the CE certification. Certification (CSA, HECC) and warning stickers are affixed to the backplate of the mask.

• Bauer RP NME Ti Titanium Cage: a replacement cage intended for the Concept C1 and NME 10 goal masks. It has a matte finish. The cage has two side plates, one on each side of the cage. One side plate includes a sticker with the model designation (RP NME Ti Sr) and the CSA certification. The other sticker indicates HECC and CE certification. On the inside of the side plate is a sticker with the country of origin (Thailand).

Bauer has determined there may be a quality issue in some of the titanium wire used in the manufacture of the cages. The metal wires on the affected cages can break and may not provide adequate protection in the event of impact from a puck, posing a facial impact or laceration hazard.

Consumers should stop using the recalled goal masks with the affected wire cages and contact Bauer Hockey Corp. Bauer Hockey Corp. has received nine reports, eight in Canada and one in the United States, of the titanium wire cage cracking or breaking upon impact with a puck, resulting in minor facial injuries in four of the reports.

Approximately 1,300 units were sold in Canada, and approximately 1,200 units were sold in the United States. The recalled products were sold from April 2013 to February 2015.

Please click on the link below to obtain more information on this recall.

Referee Clinic Oct 25, 2014

Date: 18 Sep 2014

We're looking for referees! If you are interested in a challenge, a brief workout, or a bit of extra cash, this is an excellent opportunity, whether it's your first job or you are older and seeking a way to contribute to the sport.

All interested referees must be 13 years old as of January 1, 2015 and must attend a one-day clinic before they can be certified to referee. This year's clinic happens on October 25, 2014 from 8am to 5pm and includes specialized classroom and on-ice instruction from two experienced referees.

Please do so BEFORE (preferably well before) October 15, 2014, so that we can meet all applicable deadlines.

Thanks to all those who choose to wear the stripes!

Alberta Cup - NE Zone Camp

Date: 10 Mar 2014

Vegreville will once again be hosting the NE zone camp for the Alberta Cup program. The camp will be held March 28th-30st. Skills sessions will be run Friday evening and Saturday morning followed by inter-squad games Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. We are currently in search of volunteers interested in helping make this camp a success. Anyone interested in manning the score clock or penalty box over the weekend can contact Colin Twitchell at (780) 632-9647 or e-mail Colin.Twitchell@albertainnovates.ca .A big commitment is not required, helping out for one game would be great. This is a great event for our community and an opportunity to see the best 14yr old hockey players in the NE part of the province.

(Over the years, the Alberta Cup has evolved into an event known for its professionalism and grassroots approach. Jerrold Lemko, Vice-Chair, Hockey Development Committee has been involved with the Alberta Cup program for many years. He started out as the Director of Operations for the Northeast Panthers, a position which he held for three years, before being named Provincial Coordinator for the Alberta Cup Program in 1999 and POE Provincial Coordinator in 2001. (I have seen the program develop and advance over the past eight years. It is not only an athlete development program, but it also encompasses development opportunities for administrators, referees, coaches and most recently trainers. The Alberta Cup is a very comprehensive and unique program, which is strongly grounded in its philosophies, objectives and guiding principles.÷

More information on the program can be found using the link listed below.

Thanks

HOCKEY ALBERTA IMPLEMENTS RESPECT IN SPORT FOR ALL PARENTS AND TEAM OFFICIALS FOR 2012/13 SEASON

Date: May 30, 2012

Hockey Alberta announced on Wednesday its plan to fully implement the Respect in Sport Parent and Activity Leader programs for all parents and team officials in Alberta for the 2012/13 hockey season.

(The implementation of this platform for the 2012/13 season will serve as an effective risk management measure as well as be a strong contributor to the overall safety and enjoyment of the game by all participants,÷ said Hockey Alberta's General Manager, Rob Litwinski.

By December 1, 2012 and beyond, completion of the Respect in Sport (Parent Program÷ will be required by each family of every player as a condition of the player's eligibility to participate on a sanctioned hockey team (excluding junior and senior divisions). By the same deadline, each minor, junior and senior hockey team in the province must have all registered team officials certified by the Respect in Sport (Activity Leader÷ program or have completed the equivalent (Speak Out÷ program.

(Each association will be responsible to ensure its participants and team officials meet the requirements by the deadline,÷ added Litwinski. (Many associations are requiring coaches and parents to complete the program prior to registration, but December 1 is when it is mandatory for the entire province.÷

(The Respect in Sport programs are excellent tools that will assist us in providing a safe and respectful environment for our athletes, coaches, volunteers and parents,÷ said Hockey Edmonton's President, Betty Chmilar. (Athletes playing in a Hockey Edmonton program for the 2012/13 hockey season will need to have at least one parent complete the Respect in Sport Parent program before they will be allowed to participate in any on-ice activities. We encourage parents to complete this program long before their child's first evaluation skate.÷

The Respect in Sport program is an online certification program designed to protect youth as well as enhance Hockey Alberta's mandate of providing a safe and fun environment for all participants. It is Canada's leading online bullying, abuse, harassment, and negligence prevention program for parents, coaches, and community leaders.

Respect in Sport Parent Program - This program provides information on a parents' natural influence over a child, coach or leaders role in an activity, the role parents play in their child's enjoyment of a sport or activity, and protecting children when they are outside of a parent's immediate control. The program also provides parents with tools to evaluate their own behaviour by highlighting five key "behavioural traps" frequently exhibited by parents, particularly in competitive sports.

Respect in Sport Activity Leader Program(for team officials) - This program provides in-depth information on the subjects of bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect. It demonstrates negative behaviours and provides ideas of how a situation may be best handled, including valuable information from subject matter experts delivered in a clear and concise fashion, and asks questions of the leaders based on the scenarios presented.

The cost to take Respect in Sport is $12.00/family for the Parent Program and $30.00/team official for the Activity Leader Program.  Both programs are available immediately and can be accessed at www.hockeyalberta.ca/respectinsport

HOCKEY ALBERTA TO ELIMINATE BODY CHECKING FROM ALL CATEGORIES OF PEEWEE

Date: 08 May 2013

EDMONTON, AB. - Hockey Alberta, acting on a decision made by its Board of Directors, is eliminating body checking from the Peewee division beginning in the 2013-14 season.

(Our players' safety is the foundation in making this decision,÷ said Hockey Alberta's Chair of the Board, Rob Virgil. (There is overwhelming evidence that body checking is the single most consistent risk factor for injuries and concussions in youth ice hockey.÷

In 2012, the Board of Directors established a Body Checking Review Committee and tasked them with reviewing relevant scientific research, member feedback from past AGMs and a recent survey and the positions of other Hockey Canada branches as they developed recommendations on options for body checking in Minor Hockey.

Over the course of the past year, the Committee debated and decided upon the following recommendations which were recently presented to and approved by the Board:

  1. Create an overall Player Safety Strategy that includes a focus on the reduction of serious injuries in the game at all levels.
  2. Continue to work within the guiding principles of the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) and allow these principles to frame the decision-making process around player development programs at all levels.
  3. Remove body checking from all categories of the Peewee age group (11-12 years old).

The Board of Directors felt strongly based on the research and information presented that the organization make this policy level change without delay.

(Hockey Alberta should be commended for taking a leadership role in creating a safer playing environment for our youth,÷ said Dr. Brian Benson, director of the Sport Concussion Clinic at the University of Calgary Sport Medicine Centre. (Recent evidence suggests removing body checking at the Peewee level will reduce players' risk of concussions and injuries overall by more than three-fold."

Starting next season, the rules of play for the Atom age division will also apply to the Peewee age division.  There will be no body checking in all categories of Peewee hockey, and there will be a penalty assessed for players who body check. Coaches will still be required to take the Checking Skills Program in Peewee and encouraged to teach safe checking skills in a practice environment.

Alberta Cup NE Zone Camp

Volunteer Request

Vegreville will once again be hosting the NE zone camp for the Alberta Cup program. The camp will be held March 28th-31st. Skills sessions will be run Friday evening and Saturday morning followed by inter-squad games Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. We are currently in search of volunteers interested in helping make this camp a success. Anyone interested in manning the score clock or penalty box over the weekend can contact Colin Twitchell at (780) 632-9647 or e-mail Colin.Twitchell@albertainnovates.ca A big commitment is not required, helping out for one game would be great. This is a great event for our community and an opportunity to see the best 14yr old hockey players in the NE part of the province.

This program has strong roots in our community with our current fire chief, Jerrold Lemko,  having been deeply involved:
